Established in 2005, SERT is a volunteer-based transport service covering the South East of Ireland. Our vehicles provide pick up from collection points to hospital and back again for patients undergoing radiotherapy. SERT currently provides transportation from Waterford City, Clonmel, Dungarvan, Kilkenny, Wexford and South Tipperary to the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford.
SERT currently has a fleet of five vehicles carrying up to eight patients at a time. Each vehicle is driven by one of our 150 plus volunteers on a rota basis.
SERT gains much of its funds from donations and fundraising activities, plus a grant from the HSE that goes towards the vehicle fuel costs.
Created by Waterford Consultant Surgeon Gordon Watson in 2005, SERT was established to provide safe, reliable, and compassionate transport for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford or Cork University Hospital. In its early months, the team sought support from local businesses, including Bausch and Lomb and Waterford Crystal, enabling the purchase of the first vehicles.
During the first two years, SERT helped patients travel to and from Dublin and Cork. When the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre opened in Waterford in 2007, patients gained local access to radiotherapy. Today, SERT services operate in Waterford City, Dungarvan, Kilkenny, Wexford, and Clonmel, transporting patients to the centre. By 2016, approximately one in four patients attending UPMC Whitfield used SERT’s service, highlighting its vital role in supporting patients and their families throughout their treatment journey.
SERT’s mission is to provide safe, reliable, and compassionate transport for cancer patients who are undergoing radiotherapy at the UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre in Waterford. We are committed to ensuring that every patient can attend their treatments without the stress or burden of transportation, offering a service that is not only free or charge, but also confidential, discreet, and tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient.
Our goal is to support patients and their families throughout their cancer journey, making access to vital care as smooth and stress-free as possible. By providing this essential service, we aim to remove one of the practical barriers to treatment, allowing patients to focus on their health, recovery, and wellbeing. SERT is dedicated to delivering a caring, reliable, and professional service, where every journey is treated with the utmost respect, empathy, and consideration.
